What this podcast is about
Health insurance is treated like something you’re supposed to accept, even when it doesn’t work. Most people don’t understand their plan, don’t trust the pricing, and feel trapped once they enroll.

This podcast exists to explain why people are opting out of that system and how they’re still taking care of their health. Not in theory, but in real life.

What this podcast is not
This isn’t a conspiracy podcast and it isn’t about yelling at the system. We’re not here to scare people or pretend there’s one perfect solution for everyone.

We assume most people already know healthcare is broken. Our focus is on practical alternatives and honest conversations about what actually works.

Why this show exists
Healthcare decisions are some of the most expensive and stressful choices people make, yet most of us are expected to figure it out on our own. Plans are confusing, prices change without warning, and even professionals struggle to explain how it all works.

We’ve all lived that frustration. This show is about sharing what we’ve learned the hard way so others don’t have to start from zero.

Meet the hosts
Dan is the host of Uninsured by Choice. He’s worked in healthcare marketing for years and is also a cancer survivor who navigated diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care without traditional insurance.

Sissy is the producer of the show. After years of using employer insurance, she discovered alternatives like direct primary care and health sharing and realized most people never hear these options even exist.

Ashton is the director of the podcast. Her experience navigating chronic medical needs and rising insurance costs showed her how difficult it is for families to find coverage that actually fits their lives.

What you’ll hear on the show
Each episode features conversations with people who work in or use alternatives to traditional health insurance. That includes direct primary care doctors, health sharing members, brokers, and others who understand the system from the inside.

We talk about how these options work, who they’re right for, and what tradeoffs come with choosing them. The goal isn’t to tell you what to do, but to help you understand your choices.

About the sponsor
Uninsured by Choice is presented by Zion HealthShare, a nonprofit health sharing community.

Health sharing is not insurance. Members contribute monthly to help share in one another’s eligible medical expenses, especially larger or unexpected costs. There are no networks, no open enrollment periods, and members choose their own providers.

The podcast is independently produced, but sponsored by Zion HealthShare because its mission aligns with educating people about alternatives to traditional insurance.

Why the knot
The artwork for Uninsured by Choice shows a tangled knot that’s starting to be cut through. It’s inspired by the story of the Gordian knot, a problem so complex it couldn’t be untied.

Healthcare often feels the same way. Instead of trying to untangle something that no longer makes sense, this podcast is about cutting through it and finding a different path.
